Q: What are the three types of connectors in electrical and electronic?
A: An electronic and electronic system is a hierarchical interconnected network that enables connection between different electronic devices. In order to ensure the signal transmission and power distribution for different electronic devices, a lot of connectors are needed. There are 3 types of electrical connectors according to the termination methods: board-to-board connectors, wire to wire connectors, and wire-to-board connectors.
Board-to-Board Connectors
Board-to-board connectors are used to connect PCBs without cables which can save cable space and are suitable for systems with limited space.
PCBs can be connected using parallel or vertical connectors, while connectors that connect two PCBs in a stacked manner are called mezzanine connectors. They are usually used in motherboard-daughterboard layouts, which focus on parallel layouts.
Specifications to consider when selecting mezzanine connectors include separability, mechanical requirements (such as stack height and tolerance), constraints (such as support, brackets or chassis slots and frames), and mounting types.
A backplane is a set of electrical and electronic connectors connected in parallel, with each pin of each connector connected to the same pin of all other connectors, forming a connector bus. Backplane systems are widely used in computer and telecommunication systems for their flexibility and reliability. Backplane systems are used to connect multiple add-on cards along a single backbone to form a complete backplane system. The signal generated by the transmitter reaches the receiver through multiple connectors.
Equipment used in high-speed applications requires a backplane system with high signal integrity. In the design of Gigabit backplane channels, the backplane and the related pin fields are indispensable parameters.
As the data rate increases, the backplane channel attenuates the transmitted signal. The channel causes inter-symbol interference (ISI), reflections, and crosstalk. Crosstalk and reflections introduce noise, reduce signal amplitude, and reduce signal edge rate, which further degrades the channel jitter performance. Signal integrity becomes worse at high data rates and long channel spacing. Therefore, the connectors of the backplane system should provide good impedance matching and shielding performance.
The electronic connector should also be able to withstand multiple insertion and removal of the circuit board.
Wire-to-wire Connectors and Cables
As the name implies, wire-to-wire connectors connect two wires. One end of the connector is permanently connected to the wires, and the other end forms a separable interface, which can then be permanently connected using crimping or insulation displacement contacts (IDC).
In the IDC method, the connection is made by inserting an insulated wire into a slot in a sharp metal beam. The sharp edge of the beam cuts through the insulation and creates a rigid metal-to-metal contact between the wire and the beam.
For discrete wire connections, the crimping process is usually used. However, in the case of multi-core cable conductor termination, IDC connectors are usually used. This is because IDCs offer advantages in wire handling and bulk termination.
Wire-to-wire connectors are available in a variety of shell geometries, including rectangular and round polymer shells made from a variety of polymers, as well as metal shells used primarily in military applications.
Wire-to-Board Connectors
As the name implies, wire-to-board connectors connect wires/cables to PCBs. Wire-to-board connectors are similar to wire-to-wire connectors, and most board-to-board connectors are two-piece connectors that are either press-fit or solder-fit. The mating interface of a removable connector may be the same as that of a wire-to-wire connector in the same series.
Although the applications for wire-to-board connectors are wide, the trend is to use wire-to-board connectors or cable assemblies to take advantage of the benefits of IDCs.
